Extremism--in political views, personal behavior, and through the many voices of the internet and social media--has become the norm in America. We have abdicated our sense of community in favor of individual rights. We need to re-learn moderation and temperance and the advantages of living together as a society. Escalating gun violence, addiction and abuse are symptoms of the breakdown. Can we start by simply talking to people with opposing viewpoints and get them to acknowledge that varying points of view can be valid? Shall we teach courtesy and manners in schools? How can we return to a more civil society?
Community gatherings where differences of opinion can be addressed but rules of engagement must be about civility.
